Compton Gap

I walked up this path years ago to see this rock formation. I love geology! I went about 200 meters and found this:

A large block of rock on the side of the trail. Oh well, I thought, I guess this is it. Went back to my car.

Today I pressed on…

I climbed down a steep trail, around this and there it was!

This whole cliff was covered with the Basalt Eruption.

Six sided pillars of rock.

It’s a rough climb down and up, but definitely worth it!

Park at the Compton Gap lot and take the trail across the Skyline Drive. It is actually the AT. You will come to 3 trail intersection. Take the left one.

Shenandoah National Park.

It looks like a stack of petrified logs. So unusual. Thanks.
